#5 Proportional Voting Increases Value For Bigger Members

Every trade association knows that size matters except where it doesn't -- or hasn't.

A recurring complaint among trade associations is that large members are treated the same as smaller members, even though their investment and footprint, by comparison, are typically many times larger.

The Association For Home & Hospice Care Of North Carolina recently won the approval of 80% of its members to change voting practices. The association now gives the 10 largest members in terms of revenue three votes on governance items, up from one previously. Other members get two votes, and still others still get one vote.

Thanks AHHCNC for bringing your voting 'A' game!

#4 An Old School Way Of Showing Thanks To Volunteers

From AssociationsNow.com comes the story of the North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants's "Gratitude Book" prepared by staff as a way of saying thanks to volunteer leaders.

“We wanted a simple and tangible item to give our members to recognize those in leadership roles,” says Jennifer Rowell, NCACPA’s director of member engagement. “This is an inexpensive but very personal way to thank our members.”

The book is filled with inspirational quotes, AssociationsNow.com reports, and NCACPA staff liaisons write personal messages to members inside the book’s pages before sending them on to individual volunteers.

#3 Unlimited Job Posts For Organization Members

Price is what you pay and value is what you get, and the Colorado Parks and Recreation Association gives plenty of value when it comes to its biggest members.

Chief among the benefits: unlimited free job postings for organizational members.

Not every association is so fortunate to work with a job-board partner that makes unlimited free job postings an option. But it's worth it to hold out for such an arrangement.

Your organizational members thank you, CPRA, for bringing your member-benefits A game.

#2 Making Accessibility Job 1

It's not remarkable that the Atlanta, Georgia-based International Association of Accessibility Professionals has an accessibility statement on the home page of its website.

It's remarkable that so many associations don't.

Thank you, IAAP, for showing us that we need to do better in making our own web and meeting sites accessible -- and in publicizing that. You surely are bringing your accessibility 'A' game.

#1 Keeping History Alive

So many associations miss a chance to honor their history by simply maintaining a list of past presidents on their websites.

Not the New Hampshire-based Association for Communication Excellence. It's past presidents page is curated with bios and even photos of past presidents going back all the way to 1913.

Perhaps this is easier for ACE because, after all, it specializes in communications. Nevertheless, it's a standout presentation. Thanks, ACE, for bringing your historical 'A' game!
